Some holidaymakers are allowing themselves to be charged for free EU health cover cards
Unscrupulous websites purporting to be official NHS providers are actually selling the free cards which entitle UK citizens to reduced cost or sometimes even free treatment if it is needed during their travels in EU countries.
Though the card doesn’t allow you to go abroad to receive medical care, it can help you to pay for treatment of many pre-existing or chronic conditions that cause you trouble while abroad are covered by EHIC which was formerly known as form E111.
However, it should be pointed out that the card IS NOT an alternative to proper travel insurance as it will not cover things such as mountain rescue, returning you to the UK, recovering the cost of lost or stolen property and many more problems which can occur when you are abroad.
The card is free when you fill out an application form at www.ehic.org.uk or ring an automated service on 0845 606 2030 & you should also NOT be tricked into believing that there is a fast track service available from certain private websites.
